English Description

Aquinas among the Stars: Medieval Philosophy and Astrobiology

The course critically explores the main historiographical and methodological developments that have shaped the study of medieval philosophy in the contemporary period. The first part will be devoted to the principal interpretative models of the twentieth century. Starting from the context of the Thomist reform promoted by Leo XIII, the course will outline the historical and methodological development of the discipline, leading up to the most significant issues in the current debate on the relationship between the history of medieval philosophy and contemporary philosophical reflection. The second part of the course will bring scholastic philosophy to a point of particular speculative tension. Starting from Andrew Davison’s analysis, the course will discuss the possibility that the cosmos may host other forms of intelligent life and the consequences that such a hypothesis would have for central categories of medieval metaphysics, ethics, and theology, with particular reference to Thomas Aquinas, Robert Grosseteste, and John Duns Scotus. Attention will focus especially on a fundamental question: what would happen to the doctrines of original sin and Incarnation if the cosmos hosted other rational species? The course will examine whether the fall of Adam should be understood as a universal event, whether multiple falls or unfallen species may be conceived, and whether the Incarnation of the Word should be understood as unique and cosmic or as repeatable among different forms of intelligent life. By grounding his discussion in scholastic debate, Davison offers an original perspective on the contemporary use of medieval philosophy and opens the way to a further question of great current relevance: can these issues also be extended to forms of artificial life?
